Polonnaruwa was the second great capital of medieval Sri Lanka – a planned royal city built around a vast artificial reservoir, packed with monuments of exceptional architectural and artistic quality that have survived in better condition than almost anything else on the island. This full-day tour explores the Royal Palace, Council Chamber, Vatadage circular relic house, the Gal Vihara rock sculptures and the network of temples, bathing pools and irrigation systems that made Polonnaruwa one of the engineering wonders of its age.
