Galle Fort is the most complete surviving example of a European colonial fortified town anywhere in South or Southeast Asia – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is also a functioning neighbourhood of residences, boutique businesses, colonial churches and a rampart walk with unbroken ocean views. This full-day tour explores the fort’s layered history alongside the southern coastline, visiting sea turtle conservation projects, coastal rock formations and the beaches that frame the fort’s eastern and western approaches.

Galle Fort Heritage Walk

The fort’s walled grid of cobblestoned streets holds buildings from three colonial eras – Portuguese, Dutch and British – alongside Sri Lankan vernacular architecture that adapted and absorbed all three. Our guide traces the layers.

Fort Ramparts

The 16th-century Dutch ramparts encircle the fort on three ocean-facing sides, giving walkers a 360-degree panorama of the Indian Ocean, the fishing fleet at anchor and the headland that the first Portuguese navigators rounded in the late 15th century.

Southern Coast

The coastline east and west of Galle holds sea turtle nesting beaches, crashing surf points, river mouth lagoons and the fishing communities that have worked this water for as many generations as the colonial city has stood above them.
