Into the mangroves, where the river has its own rules.

The Madu River in Sri Lanka’s southern wet zone flows through one of the most biologically distinctive river environments on the island – a network of 64 mangrove islands, herb garden islets, ancient rock temple outcrops and shallow channels where fish, birds and reptiles coexist in remarkable density. This half-day boat safari drifts through these channels at the pace of the tide, reading the ecosystem through the eyes of a local naturalist guide who knows every island and its inhabitants.

Experiences Include

  1. Guided boat safari through Madu River mangrove channels
  2. Visit to the floating herb gardens and cinnamon island
  3. Birdwatching for kingfishers, herons and cormorants
  4. Optional visit to the rock temple of Kothduwa

Tour Highlights

Mangrove Ecosystem

The Madu River’s mangrove network is a nursery for marine species, a feeding ground for migratory birds and a carbon sink of local ecological importance – a living system that rewards patient observation from a slow-moving boat.

Floating Herb Gardens

Sri Lankan cinnamon – true cinnamon, not the cassia sold elsewhere as a substitute – grows on one of the river’s small islands, peeled by local craftspeople and laid to dry in the same way it has been harvested for export since the Dutch colonial era.

Kothduwa Rock Temple

A Buddhist shrine built on a river island rock, accessible only by boat and occupied by monks whose residence in this unusual riverine setting gives the temple an atmosphere quite unlike any temple reached by road.
