Whale & Dolphin Watching Tour – Mirissa

The largest animals that have ever existed. In the water. Right here.

The waters off Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s southern coast lie above a deep ocean trench that blue whales and sperm whales follow on their migration routes through the Indian Ocean. This full-day experience departs at dawn on a purpose-built whale watching vessel with marine naturalist guides, heading into the deep water where blue whale sightings are genuinely reliable from November to April. The spinner dolphin pods that accompany most departures provide company on the way out and back.

Experiences Include

  1. Early morning departure on a responsible whale watching vessel
  2. Guided observation of blue whales and sperm whales in their migratory habitat
  3. Spinner dolphin pod encounters
  4. Marine naturalist commentary on cetacean behaviour and ocean ecology

Tour Highlights

Blue Whale Encounters

The blue whale – the largest animal in the history of life on Earth – surfaces with a blow visible from hundreds of metres away and dives with a fluking movement that photographers have traveled enormous distances to capture. Mirissa offers some of the most accessible blue whale viewing in the world.

Spinner Dolphins

Sri Lanka’s resident spinner dolphin populations number in the thousands – tight, fast-moving pods that frequently bow-ride with vessels and leap in extended aerial spirals that give them their name.

Deep Ocean Environment

The submarine topography off Mirissa – a continental shelf edge dropping into deep water within a few kilometres of the coast – is what draws the deep-diving cetaceans and makes this one of the genuinely exceptional whale watching destinations in the Indian Ocean region.
