Udawalawe National Park Safari Tour

The elephant park. No other introduction necessary.

Udawalawe National Park was established to protect the wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir and has become one of the finest places in Asia to observe free-roaming wild Asian elephants in open savannah conditions. Elephant sightings are virtually guaranteed throughout the year – herds of twenty, thirty and sometimes over a hundred individuals moving through the grasslands around the reservoir edges in a manner that makes Udawalawe one of the most reliably spectacular wildlife parks on the island.

Experiences Include

  1. Half-day jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park
  2. Guided elephant herd observation in open grassland environments
  3. Birdwatching including endemic and migratory species
  4. Visit to the Elephant Transit Home orphanage feeding sessions (optional)

Tour Highlights

Elephant Herds

Udawalawe’s elephant population is the most reliably visible large mammal concentration in Sri Lanka – a park where the combination of open savannah, reservoir grassland and predictable elephant movement patterns makes close-approach viewing in naturalistic conditions a near-daily occurrence.

Open Savannah Landscapes

Unlike the dense scrub forests of Yala and Wilpattu, Udawalawe’s grassland-dominated environment gives safari jeeps long sight-lines across flat terrain – a visual clarity that makes the experience feel more African than typically Sri Lankan.

Elephant Transit Home

This government-operated facility raises elephant calves orphaned by human-wildlife conflict for eventual release into the wild. The twice-daily feeding sessions are observed from a viewing platform at a respectful distance from the animals.
