Tea Plantation & Hill Country Experience Tour

The leaf that built an empire. Still growing on these same hills.

Sri Lanka’s hill country tea landscape – the rolling green rows of tea bushes across the highlands of Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Hatton – is one of the most recognizable agricultural environments on earth and the source of the Ceylon tea varieties that have defined global tea culture since the 1870s. This full-day tour enters the plantation world properly, moving from a working tea estate and factory through highland village communities to the viewpoints and waterfall cascades that make the hill country one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed landscapes.

Experiences Include

  1. Guided tour of a working tea plantation and processing factory
  2. Tea-plucking experience in highland tea gardens
  3. Guided tasting session comparing elevation and estate varieties
  4. Visit to highland waterfall and scenic viewpoints

Tour Highlights

Tea Factory Tour

The processing stages from freshly plucked green leaf to the finished dried tea in the packet are revealed in a working factory environment – withering, rolling, fermentation, drying and sorting each contributing their part to the character of the final cup.

Tea Garden Walk

Walking the rows of a tea estate with a plucking guide who has been doing this work for decades is a different kind of education to the factory tour – a conversation about the physicality of the work, the seasonal rhythms of the crop and the community that exists within the estate.

Highland Scenery

The Nuwara Eliya and Hatton highlands offer a visual palette that is entirely different from the rest of Sri Lanka – misty, green, English in its architectural borrowings and deeply Sri Lankan in everything that was not borrowed.
