Between June and September each year, hundreds of Asian elephants converge on the drying shores of the Minneriya Reservoir – gathering from across the surrounding forests to feed on the exposed grass and socialize in herds that number in the hundreds. Known simply as The Gathering, it is one of the largest congregations of wild Asian elephants recorded anywhere on the planet and one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in Asia. This safari is timed to the gathering season and positioned to deliver the optimum elephant viewing experience.

The Gathering

When the rains fail and the Minneriya Reservoir recedes, the exposed grass flats become the most important feeding ground for elephants across the northern dry zone – drawing animals from Wasgamuwa, Kaudulla and the forests between in numbers that constitute a genuine wildlife spectacle.

Reservoir Ecosystem

The Minneriya tank is an ancient irrigation reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD and still functioning as an agricultural water source while simultaneously supporting one of the most important wildlife habitats in the Cultural Triangle region.

Elephant Behaviour

The Gathering is not only about numbers but about observation – watching family groups interact, young males test their independence and matriarchs navigate their herds across the open flats is a behavioural education in wild elephant society.
