Polonnaruwa Heritage Exploration Tour

A medieval kingdom still standing in the forest.

Polonnaruwa was the second great capital of medieval Sri Lanka – a planned royal city built around a vast artificial reservoir, packed with monuments of exceptional architectural and artistic quality that have survived in better condition than almost anything else on the island. This full-day tour explores the Royal Palace, Council Chamber, Vatadage circular relic house, the Gal Vihara rock sculptures and the network of temples, bathing pools and irrigation systems that made Polonnaruwa one of the engineering wonders of its age.

Experiences Include

  1. Guided tour of Polonnaruwa Royal Palace complex and Audience Hall
  2. Visit to Gal Vihara and its four monumental Buddha sculptures
  3. Exploration of the Vatadage, Rankoth Vehera and Lankatilaka
  4. Walk through the royal bathing pools and Parakrama Samudra reservoir embankment

Tour Highlights

Gal Vihara

Four figures of the Buddha – a seated contemplative, a standing, a diminutive shrine figure and the enormous 15-metre reclining figure – carved directly into a single granite face by the royal sculptors of Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. They are among the finest rock sculptures in Asia.

Royal Palace Complex

The remains of King Parakramabahu’s seven-storey palace give an impression of the concentrated urban density of Polonnaruwa’s royal quarter – a city within a city of audience halls, residential towers and ceremonial spaces.

Parakrama Samudra

The great tank of Polonnaruwa was the hydraulic heart of the medieval capital – an artificial sea created by an engineer-king who understood that mastery of water in the dry zone was the foundation of civilizational power.
