Sri Lanka's most ancient wilderness. Barely touched.

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and arguably its most atmospheric – a vast wilderness of dry forest and shallow natural lakes called villus, where leopards are regularly encountered and the near-absence of tour crowds creates a safari experience with genuine wildness. This full-day safari departs early for the morning activity window, when Wilpattu’s predators are moving and the villus hold wading birds in extraordinary numbers, and includes an afternoon drive through the park’s deep forest sections.

Experiences Include

  1. Full-day guided jeep safari in Wilpattu National Park
  2. Leopard tracking and observation in forest and villu habitat
  3. Birdwatching around natural lake systems and forest edge
  4. Sloth bear and crocodile observation opportunities

Tour Highlights

Villu Lake Ecosystems

Wilpattu’s defining habitat feature – shallow natural lakes rimmed with open grassland and backed by dry forest – creates a wildlife viewing environment unique in Sri Lanka, concentrating animals at predictable water sources throughout the dry season.

Leopard Territory

Wilpattu’s leopard density and the park’s relative lack of visitor pressure means encounters here can feel genuinely intimate – a solo leopard on a forest track observed without the convoy of jeeps that sometimes characterises Yala sightings.

Forest Wilderness

The deeper sections of Wilpattu are among the wildest accessible landscapes in Sri Lanka – old-growth dry zone forest of enormous trees, silence and a sense of ecological continuity that the more visited parks cannot quite match.
